Surely many of us have a balcony or a small patio in our homes and we want to get to fill it with plants or flowers, so be aware that in this article we are going to see some small guidelines so that you can have a small urban garden in your house In a simple way and to enjoy it all in the home.
The first thing that we have to look for in order to have an urban garden is the amount of sunlight that comes to us, this part is the fundamental because depending on the amount of light we receive a day we can grow more or fewer vegetables, the ideal place to have a balcony Oriented to the south, but since it is not a thing that we can choose, we will have to adapt to what we have, do not worry, because there are many plants that can grow with some shade or even with very little direct sunlight.
Once we are clear that the next thing we need is a good container to grow our vegetables, in this aspect we use almost everything, from recycled water bottles, small tetra bricks or even boxes of poliespan or fruit, ideally have as Minimum between 20 and 30cm deep for the plants to develop properly, not all of them need so much depth, but that way we cover all. If we prefer we can make our own table with pallets, super simple and also almost free! Where we will be much more comfortable to grow our vegetables.
At the moment we have chosen the container or made the table of cultivation, comes another of the fundamental parts for the cultivation of our vegetables, and is to always choose the best possible mix for our plants, which will need a lot of nutrients for us Bring good fruit! Among others, the three basic nutrients plants need apart from other micronutrients, which are nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. For this reason, it is fundamental to prepare very well the mixture that we are going to put to our pots or tables of culture.
If you have prepared everything you need, the next step will start planting the seeds. You should know that there are different ways to do it, depending on the vegetable you grow. The most common are three:
- Seedbeds use:they are small containers that help protect fruits and vegetables during the germination phase. Once the plants have taken root, it will be necessary to transplant them into larger containers, where they will grow permanently. In this process, you have to be careful not to damage the roots when you remove them from the seedling. It is recommended to moisten the soil well before removing the shoots.
- Plantar directly:you only need to enter two or three seeds in the alveoli and cover him with earth. You should not bury them too deep so they can go outside without obstacles. The roots of fruits and vegetables tend to grow more in width than along, so you do not need to use pots too deep, except for those vegetables that are born in the land (e.g. potatoes or carrots).
Planting seedlings: seedlings are buds that can be introduced directly into the pot or cultivation table that have passed the seed phase. This resource is highly recommended if it is the first time you grow fruits, vegetables or legumes, as they are plants that have already survived the germination stage.
With all this we can start to grow our vegetables if we are new to the subject, I always recommend short cycle crops with few or almost no pest problems, the ideal ones to start with are lettuce, radish, chard, garlic… And gradually get into crops like tomatoes, peppers…
