Crisis increasingly frequent

There was a time when heartburn was considered a mere nuisance. Now some doctors believe that frequent seizures can damage the esophagus (although it may be that this phenomenon is exaggerated by pharmaceutical companies that manufacture medicines against heartburn).

In recent years, chronic heartburn has even acquired a new name: the illness of gastroesophageal reflux disease and new drugs to treat them.

The relief has its price

The remedies contain serious drugs and can have side effects, especially if you do not follow the instructions on the label.

1. Dementia

Much recent survey of people over 65 years found that those who use H2 blockers commonly used to reduce stomach acid are 2.4 times more likely than others to suffer from dementia or another form of mental impairment.

  • The H2 blockers include nizatidine, famotidine, cimetidine, and ranitidine.

However, this report conflicts with the findings of several previous studies.

  • Current knowledge: the H2 blockers act on histamine which is known to play a role in brain function.

2. Erectile Dysfunction

The medical literature has reported the development of erectile dysfunction and loss of libido after taking certain drugs against burns and ulcers.

However, such problems are rare and reversible once the man stopped using drugs.

3. Gynecomastia

A 2004 study found that people aged over 65 years who currently use drugs to reduce long-term acid were 4.5 times more likely to suffer from B12 deficiency than others.

  • The drugs reduce acid include H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole, which is available without the prescription, and several prescription drugs.
  • These drugs can cause problems for some older people, who often have too little acid in the stomach while the body needs to help absorb vitamin B12.
  • A deficiency of this vitamin can lead to a decrease in red blood cells and lead to pernicious anemia, a condition that causes fatigue, weakness, rapid heartbeat and other symptoms.
